New Member Information

Welcome to the Womens 18 Hole League at Hobbit's Glen. We are so glad that you have joined and want to share the following information about how our league works.
We play on Wednesday mornings with 8:30 shotgun start.
Signing Up for play: You can sign up to play using the GolfGenius link on the 2023 Season Schedule page. Your GolfGenius account can be set up or accessed through the Pro Shop at Hobbit's Glen. [USE THE SAME EMAIL YOU PROVIDE THE LEAGUE.] Once created, bookmark the website and sign in whenever you need to add or change your attendance for an event. Please sign up or cancel by Monday of the week of play. For cancellations after pairings are posted, contact Beth Leaman, our Tournament Chair so adjustments can be made to the pairings. If cancelling on Wednesday morning, call the Hobbit’s Glen Pro Shop.
Scoring: Each week, points are awarded for:
Attendance 1
Tournament winner 5
1st Low gross & low net 5
2nd Low gross & low net 4
3rd Low net 3
4th Low net 2
5th Low net 1
Low Putts 3
Hole-in-one 10
Eagle 5
Birdie 3
Chip-in 3
Points are accumulated during the season and paid out at the end of the season at the Awards Banquet.
Keeping the Score Card: Generally, record all players' ACTUAL SCORES for your group in GolfGenius AND on a paper card (hole score/putts) with one line for each person. Total the score and the putts, indicating birdies, eagles and chip-ins. Check the GolfGenius totals agains the paper card and reconcile any differences, then sign and date the card. Take a clear photo of the paper card and email or message to Beth Leaman. DO NOT enter your score in the GHIN handicap system. The League will do that for all players each week.
Developing a Handicap: To play in the league you must have a USGA 18-hole handicap. If you do not already have one, you will need to acquire one in order to earn points tournament points. You can sign up and pay for an official handicap at the Hobbit's Glen Pro Shop. Some memberships already include the handicap fee.
New members without an established handicap must obtain a temporary 18-hole handicap (five scores) within a month after joining. Their 18-hole USGA handicap must be obtained within three months after joining, unless there are extenuating circumstances as ruled by the Executive Board. This is easy to do. Every time you play a round (other than on Wednesday with the League) on any officially-rated golf course, you should enter your score in the handicap computer, which is located in the Pro Shop at Hobbit’s Glen, using the new World Handicap System Maximum Hole Score.* All you will need is your Columbia Association membership number, your score and the date you played. If you need help doing this for the first time, ask another member of the league or someone behind the desk to help you. You can also go to the USGA GHIN web site and enter your scores from your home computer. PLEASE, make sure to record all your scores so your handicap is accurate for calculating the net scores each week.
USGA Rules: We follow USGA rules. The ball is played as it lies unless we are playing Winter Rules (lift, clean and place within six inches - in the fairway only). All putts must be holed.
Lastly: Please have fun. Everyone in the league was a new member at some point, so we all know there is a lot to absorb and there are a lot of people to meet.
*The new World Handicap System Maximum Hole Score allows for extra strokes on the hardest holes on the course based on your handicap, plus 2 strokes (double bogey) per hole as a maximum for handicap calculations. For example, if your handicap is 18, you'd get one stroke per hole for handicap, plus 2 strokes for the new system, so on a par 4 hole, you can post up to a 7 (4 for par + 1 for your handicap + 2 for maximum). Even if you have a bad hole and actually scored a 10, the most the system will allow is 7. Enter your actual score for each hole and the computer will calculate the maximum per hole for your handicap.

Using GolfGenius for Scoring During Play:
- Each golfer will have an account with their email as the user name and a password they have selected.
- Only one golfer in the foursome needs to have the tool open to enter scores.
- Scores can be entered as holes are played or all at once at the end of the round.
- Golfers will also complete and turn in paper scorecards as backup and for putts and chip-ins.
- Scores entered for regular play will be automatically forwarded to GHIN to count toward the golfer’s handicap.
